Thai products for muscles: warming balms, liniments and creams

Sore muscles after training, a stiff back, a tense neck after a day at the computer — in Thailand the answer is a balm. How to choose

Before training — liquid Namman Muay oil, quick to spread over large muscles. After exercise and for chronic pain — a red or black balm, a warming patch overnight. Fresh bruise or sprain — cold and a cooling (green or yellow) balm for the first day, heat from the second day. For daytime use — Counterpain cream, which absorbs without an oily trace. Sensitive skin — white or yellow balm instead of red.

Good to know

All products are external, based on menthol, camphor, methyl salicylate and essential oils. Keep away from broken skin and mucous membranes, do not combine with a heating pad or tight bandage, wash hands after use. Methyl salicylate is a salicylate: with aspirin allergy, anticoagulants, pregnancy or for children under 12 — ask a doctor first. A balm relieves pain but does not treat an injury.

Red or black balm — which is stronger?

Red warms faster and sharper; black (108 herbs, cobra) works deeper and longer for chronic lower-back and knee pain. Test red on a small area first.

How long does the effect last?

Warmth from a balm — 1–2 hours, from a warming patch — up to 8 hours. Apply up to three times a day.
