Thai oral care: herbal toothpastes, tooth powders, mouthwashes
Thai toothpaste is one of the products people come back for: concentrated herbal pastes by Tepthai and Rasyan, the classic botanical pastes by Twin Lotus, charcoal and whitening pastes by Darlie, tooth powders by Supaporn with guava leaf, children's pastes by Kodomo, plus propolis mouthwashes and sprays. The base is clove, guava leaf, salt, camphor, mint and mangosteen extract — what Thais used for their teeth long before fluoride. Over 100 products.
How to choose
Bleeding gums — clove and guava (Twin Lotus Original, Rasyan, Tepthai, Propoliz mouthwash). Stains from tea, coffee and smoking — Sparkle Coffee & Tea, Darlie Charcoal, Supaporn powder. Sensitive teeth — avoid abrasive powders, use a mild mint paste and a soft brush. Children — Kodomo pastes by age only. Concentrated pastes barely foam and taste salty; a pea-sized amount is enough, and a 25 g jar lasts about a month.
Good to know
Herbal pastes and powders are hygiene products, not treatment: persistent bleeding, pain or loose teeth need a dentist. Do not use powders and charcoal pastes daily on thin enamel. Some Thai herbal pastes are fluoride-free — alternate with a fluoride paste for cavity protection. Do not swallow.
Questions and answers
Do they really whiten?
They remove surface stains and restore the natural shade of the enamel; no paste makes teeth whiter than their natural colour.
Which ones contain fluoride?
Darlie, Sparkle and Kodomo (by age). Classic herbal concentrates such as Tepthai and Twin Lotus Original are fluoride-free.
